  I'm Not Proud Of It
Sometimes I really hate that I care about sports at all. My favorite team in any sport, the Phoenix Suns, lost again to the team I hate most in sports, the Los Angeles Lakers. I told myself that I wouldn't watch the end of the game, because this was the type of series with "upset" written all over it, and the Suns are (or were) the "favorite". Yes, the Suns have the MVP of the league in Steve Nash, but we also have no healthy big men and can't play any defense when it counts. But instead of turning the set off and just reading about the loss later, like a sensible Suns fan, I watched the Lakers tie the game to go into overtime, and then I watched the Suns see a four point lead with under a minute to go whittled to one point. And then, of course, Kobe Blanking Bryant hits the game winner at the buzzer. Perfect.

So I threw the remote at the wall, and put a 3/4" dent in the drywall, which I will now have to patch. And since the room is wallpapered, I'll have to re-wallpaper or paint to hide my intemperate remote whanging. But in my defense, it is sometimes hard rooting for the Chicago Cubs of the NBA. Check that-at least the Cubs have won a World Series, just not in a long while. The Suns are the oldest team in the NBA never to have won a title. And I don't even care about the Suns not doing well in the playoffs, as they have no chance against the Spurs or Pistons this year, but they have to lose to the one team I can't abide, and who is much lower-seeded. The Suns are the number two seed, and the Lakers the seventh.

At least my best friend back in Phoenix made me feel a little better. I called to tell him what I'd done, and he admitted that he broke his remote by squeezing it in frustration. So at least we're both equally impulsive, and he's more mature than I am to begin with. By the way, TiVo remotes are tough. The remote flew apart on impact, but I managed to snap the case back into place, wiggle the rubber keys into their correct positions, put the batteries back in, and it works as ever. It didn't even forget the code for my T.V., and the batteries were out for at least five minutes.
