  The Amazing Moments
Parenthood has its sublime moments. There we were, my family, sitting in a dark movie theater, watching Marley & Me. It was toward the end; the sad part. I looked over at one of my nine-year-old daughters, and she was sniffling, her cheek closest to me tear-stained, riveted to the movie. She'd already read the book, and knew this was coming. She cried.

This was magic to me. For the first time I got to see one of my daughters moved by something she had discovered and read on her own, not communicated to her from me or her mother. She had experienced the book all by herself, and was now taking in a scene from the book in the movie all on her own terms. I got to watch her reaction, and be privileged to see my little girl taking a step toward apprehending the world on her own, with no filtering of the experience from her mother or me. And I knew that it was happening in tandem, with her twin, also having read the book, sitting just out of my sight, sniffling next to her mother. Our girls are on their way.

Confessions of one in the anonymous billions.
